Fonts and Text Appear Blocky in Windows or
Internet Explorer
Symptoms
When you use Windows Explorer or
Internet Explorer, fonts and text may appear "blocky", and this issue
may be more noticeable with larger fonts.
NOTE: You may notice this issue in other Windows-based
programs.
Resolution
Enable the font smoothing feature:
Windows XP
To enable the ClearType feature in your
Windows XP-based computer:
- Click Start, click
Control Panel, click Appearance
and Themes, and then click Display.
- On the Appearance tab,
click Effects.
- Click to select the
Use the following method to smooth edges of
screen fonts check box, and then click ClearType
in the list.
You can adjust the contrast setting for
ClearType to your personal preference. Although there are no tools or
settings in Windows XP for doing this, the following Microsoft Web site
includes tools to turn ClearType on or off, and to adjust the contrast:
Windows 98, ME, or 2000
To enable the font smoothing feature in your
Windows 98, ME or 2000-based computer:
- Click Start, point to
Settings, click Control Panel, and
then double-click Display.
- Click the Effects tab,
click the Smooth edges of screen fonts
check box, and then click OK.
Windows 95
To enable the font smoothing feature in your
Windows 95-based computer:
- Click Start, point to
Settings, click Control Panel, and
then double-click Display.
- Click the Plus! tab,
click the Smooth edges of screen fonts
check box, and then click OK.
